As an essential business, WLR is continuing to provide a twenty four hour service to listeners in Waterford City and County during this Covid-19 crisis. Recognised as Europe’s most trusted news source, radio throughout Ireland has experienced a huge boost in listenership as people strive to stay connected to their local communities.
As Ireland’s Local Radio Station of the Year, WLR is to the forefront in keeping Waterford listeners and its business community informed and updated 24/7. While WLR Sales and Marketing staff are working remotely, all on air and in news and production are part of the frontline and working flat out in The Broadcast Centre to keep Waterford connected.
Damien Tiernan who anchors the 10am to 12 noon slot on the station says there has been a noticeable increase in the numbers contacting ‘Deise Today’ to raise matters of concern, to share their stories, air their views and just to keep in touch with what’s going on around them.
WLR news, on the hour seven days a week, is putting local news and the county’s efforts to combat the virus at the heart of every bulletin. Liz Reddy, Head of News, says the station is in contact almost hourly with the HSE and with the City and County Council to ensure WLR listeners are not just hearing the latest Covid updates but also about the Trojan efforts of many who are working on the frontline and volunteering to ensure the elderly and vulnerable are being looked after.
Local radio has come into its own during this crisis. This was recognised this week when President Michael D Higgins chose local radio as the platform to address the people of Ireland with his message of hope and of thanks to those working in the health service.
As an independent commercial radio station, WLR continues to serve businesses in Waterford, with sales staff working remotely and full production facilities available to record advertisements and other promotions for radio and its social media channels.
WLR continues to broadcast its weekly Business Programme, The Hot Desk with Irish Times Journalist Eoghan Dalton at 6.15 pm on Wednesdays.
