The Solas Cancer Support Centre Dance for Life took place on Friday, 29th March to a packed house in the Theatre Royal. 17 couples danced on the night and after ten weeks of tuition, rehearsal and preparations they all did themselves. The atmosphere was electric with friends and families supporting all the dancers.
Head Judge Jimmy Lyons praised the couples for taking to the stage and embracing the challenge of learning a complex routine in such a short time: ‘It must have been nerve racking for all the amateur dancers to learn these dances and perform them with such professionalism in these auspicious surroundings –they should all give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done‘
Alicia Maguire General Manager of event sponsor workLAB spoke on the night: ‘WorkLAB Waterford is delighted to be the main sponsor for the Dance for Life event this year. This is the fifth year that Seamus Kilgannon has supported the Solas Cancer Support Centre previously under the brand of Schivo but now under his newest venture workLAB Waterford. This is an excellent event to be associate with as it combines fun and fitness and makes learning to dance more accessible to those that in the past may have shied away from the dancefloor. We are proud to be associated with this event as it is a valuable fundraiser for this great charity whilst also giving so many people fun, joy and smiles all down to the fantastic entertainment provided by the wonderful dancers’.
The winning dancer partners were Laura Brown and Ciara Larkin who wowed the audience with their Charleston on the night. After being presented with their trophies they had the unenviable task of having to dance again – to the delight of all present. With a second flawless performance they left the audience in no doubt that they were worthy trophy winners.
Dee Jacques, Chair of the voluntary Board of Trustees of the Solas Cancer Support Centre, thanked all the dancers and volunteers involved in the show and acknowledged the contribution that this event makes ‘The free support services provided to those affected by cancer would not be possible without events like this. Last year, over 700 people used the services provided by the Solas Cancer Support Centre and this is all due to the support we receive from the public. We are really delighted to have workLAB support us this year and our sincere thanks to Michelle Condon and Michelle Quilty for putting all our dancers through their paces in preparation for the night. Finally a special word of thanks to the wonderful team of Solas Volunteers who made the night possible’
